Environmental issues are incorporated into subjects such as Geography, Social Studies and Science. In addition, many schools have mini gardens to provide students first-hand contact with nature. Some schools also organized annual recycling programs.

This programme was introduced last year to create natural habitats in schools for animals such as birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. Besides offering a learning opportunity, this programme aims to develop awareness and appreciation for biodiversity through students’ participation.

Is It Enough?

Unfortunately, environmental education in Singapore remains weak with environmental content infused in other mainstream subjects. Hence, the amount of time and importance given to environmental education is relatively low which may not be effective in affecting behavioral change. Given that the green industry will soon play a significant role in our economy, government should consider having environmental education as a subject on its own in secondary or even primary schools. Moreover, it is easier to develop a strong positive attitude toward environment when young than to change it later.
