“Car-lite” Singapore

Taking Public Transport as Part of a Green Lifestyle

Ministry of Transport will be enhancing the accessibility and convenience of Singapore’s transport system to encourage use of public transport instead of owning cars.  Many of us use public transport to move around in Singapore. By doing so, carbon footprint will be reduced and there will be better air quality. The government plans to build about 100 more MRT stations and acquire 1000 new buses to cope with the crowd during peak periods. To further improve commuters’ travel experience, the Land Transport Authority has launched the MyTransport.SG app to help users with their travel decisions. However, frequent train breakdowns remain as the biggest barrier for the public to fully rely on public transport. If Singapore’s government want to progress into a “car-lite” city, the most important issue to solve is the reliability of public transport.

Encouraging Car-Sharing

Car-sharing will help to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. As the cost of owning a car in Singapore is extremely high, the demand for car-sharing is on the rise. Besides providing more car-sharing carpark lots to increase accessibility to such services, LTA also plan to explore the viability of electric vehicle car-sharing programme. Although technically feasible, challenges such as high costs and lack of accessible charging infrastructure pose difficulties for mass adoption.

  1. Cycling can play an important role in our car-lite future too. Besides being a good recreational activity as you’ve alluded to on your page on PCN, with the right infrastructure, cycling can be an alternative to cars and public transport.

If you have time, please check out my page on cycling, I have a video of my commute to work and other thoughts on how cycling can play a bigger role. http://www.sgcyclist.com/
