Connection to Nature

There is something deeper, spiritual and almost ineffable about people’s attachment to trees” – Robert Sommer

More than 16 million people have visited national and state parks of coast redwood forests( encompass half of all old growth left) from 1971 to 2009. These parks does not only serve as a recreation for family and friends through strolls along the stretches of trees, possible horeseback riding . Many people come to the national redwood forest to admire the magnificent trees and to say that they have been there and see the tallest and among the oldest trees in the world . These sorts of visitors are also known as experience seekers.

These parks , at least the portions that are accessible by humans and can be viewed at from a far, have several other benefits to us, physically and psychologically .

  • Environmental identity

Identity refers to the way information is organized about the self . An environmental identity is when nature is viewed as important to us and is part of our sense of self . Personal experiences in the Coast redwood forests through the national and state parks could contribute to one’s environmental identity through for instance emotional attachment to trees or feelings of being one with the ecosystem as you walk through the forest.

  • Reduction in stress and anxiety

  • Escape

A trip to the Coast redwood parks could serve as an escape from their usual worries and demands of their everyday lives

  • Physical Activity

Activities such as walking and hiking through the park can contribute as a form of physical activity and exercise which has positive implications to ones health. Scientist, biologists and some other certified people also engage in climbing these coast redwoods, ofcourse in the least damaging way possible.

  • Attention Restoration Theory

According to this theory , mental fatigue arising from directed attention in the urban area that requires effort can be restored and recovered through natural experiences, such as walks in the coast redwood forests.
