Community

A community can be described as a small unit with common visions . They do not need to share the same location to be considered a community , they can be interest based , values based, etc . There are several communities that have contributed to the protection of the Coastal Redwoods and are still doing it now . But i will focus on three organizations in this blog that i feel play crucial roles in preserving the Coastal Redwoods for future generations .

sempervirens fundSempervirens Fund

Sempervirens Fund is an organization that aims to protect and preserve Redwood Forest and everything else that comes with it . It also aims to spread information and awareness about the Redwoods to help create a sense of appreciation for it , so as to garner more support to protect the endangered species of trees . They have also purchased unprotected redwood forest land to create parks to preserve them.

Through their main webpage , they have also created opportunities for us individuals to play a part in the conservation of the Redwoods through donations. They also encourage personal experiences among the redwoods by giving us information on activities that we can participate in and to enjoy the natural environment. Through personal experiences like these , it helps to foster a stronger environmental identity , which would make one feel more driven to protect the Redwood forest because it would be in turn protecting a part of ones identity too.

save the redwoods leagueSave-the-redwoods-league

In 1918, Save-the-redwoods-leagure is a non profit organization founded by a group of people who shared the same beliefs that the Redwood Forest is worth saving .They have contributed to protecting the Coastal Redwood Forests in several ways .

Overtime, they bought about 170,000 acres of redwoods to save them from ending up in the hands of the timber companies. They donated these acres to the California state redwood parks and to Redwood National Park . They have also worked closely with several other organizations like wildlife conservation society.

national geographicNational Geographics

National Geographic serves largely as an educational platform to spread awareness of certain environmental, social and political issues that are happening around the world. National geographics have written and published photos and articles of redwoods, passing information over to the general public and whoever may be interested.

However i am going to focus on the pivotal event of exploration and curiosity that built the path towards the establishment of the Redwood National Park. It began when the National Geographic society expedition went into the remains of the redwoods in 1963. From the expedition ,the head of the society believed that a national park should be established to preserve the ever depleting redwoods . He contemplated that by finding a Redwood tree with a world-record height , it would make a stronger case for a federal protection .

Paul.A Zahl, a writer that led the expedition , found a tree that looked tall enough to break the record . A group of surveyors were called down and confirmed that it broke the record at a height of 367.8 feet. The tree was called the “tall tree” and the grove , the “tall tree grove”. The discovery of the worlds tallest tree was a piece of information that would have gotten the attention of many people around the world , including congress. In 1968, the Redwood National Park was formed and the tall tree grove became the centre of the park
