Is Wasting Food that Big of a Problem?

The amount of food wasted in Singapore has been steadily increasing over the past decade. The repercussions of this trend can be found in the “Impacts” section of this site. In conjunction with The Food Bank Singapore Ltd, Helpling Singapore has created an infographic that demonstrates clearly the amount of food currently wasted in Singapore as of 2015.

Despite the large majority of people expressing concern over food wastage, the amount of food wasted continues to increase over the years. It seems that even though people have the right attitude towards proper food consumption habits, Singaporeans are not consciously changing that negative behaviour to suit more sustainable ways of consuming food products. This exacerbates the problem as it is not the lack of concern of knowledge that contributes to the problem of food wastage in Singapore, but pure negligence and the lack of of action, which will require more in-depth intervention methods that are strong enough to emotionally engage and persuade Singaporeans to take action.
