Fifty-seven contributed articles, from an international roster of scientists, are collected in two volumes. They are arranged in no particular order, but the second volume does contain a fairly detailed index. An introductory essay offers abstracted versions of the articles, and a commentary from two U. of Rome-based scientists gives an overview of the field, including its potential for revolutionary applications in many arenas, and a very brief nod to the need for some research concerning possible environmental hazards. A sampling of topics: molecular foundations for onset wear, thermodynamic and kinetic theories of nanowire growth, lipid nanotubes as scaffolds to create structured inorganic nanomaterials, and biomedical application of nanotechnology in cancer early diagnosis.
