About the Seminar:

Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) was a medical doctor and collector. He started with natural history specimens when he served as a doctor in Jamaica but his collection grew to encompass ethnographic items of all sorts with books and manuscripts at the core. Acquired for the nation after his death, his magpie gatherings formed the most significant of the founding collections of the British Museum. His collection of Chinese books, the first substantial grouping in the United Kingdom, may come as a surprise.
