To celebrate Open Access Week 2017, Cambridge University Library’s Office of Scholarly Communication has announced Professor Hawking’s permission to make his thesis freely available and Open Access in Apollo. By making his PhD thesis Open Access, anyone can now freely download and read this historic and compelling research by the then little-known 24-year-old Cambridge postgraduate.

Springer Nature has launched a new, free-to-use research solution, Springer Nature Experiments, to help researchers in the life sciences by accessing the relevant protocols and methods to support their research projects.
Protocols are “recipes” used in laboratory research to support the design and implementation of reproducible experiments. The step-by-step instructions help researchers recreate an experiment by typically including information on the materials required, equipment and set-up. Methods are new scientific procedures for solving existing problems. Together, these two different types of content are the cornerstone for scientists to successfully conduct their research.
Springer Nature publishes one of the largest available collection of protocols and methods for the life sciences with content from SpringerProtocols, Nature Methods, Nature Protocols and Protocol Exchange – the free repository for scientists to share their protocols with the scientific community. Springer Nature Experiments provides access to all of these through a single easy-to-use platform, designed to save researchers’ time.
The platform uses advanced knowledge models to categorise content based on techniques and organisms – the two most commonly used search categories identified in user research. With the help of artificial intelligence and text mining technologies, these terms are recognised and extracted from the content, enabling users to perform searches and narrow down their results quickly and easily.
In addition, users can evaluate and compare protocols prior to accessing the full-text with the help of protocol landing pages. These summarize key information such as the keywords mentioned, article history and citations which gives an indication of whether the protocol has been used successfully in other research projects.

ResearchGate, a popular social network and papers sharing site, may have to remove thousands of papers from their site.
Five publishers have formed the Coalition for Responsible Sharing and will be issuing takedown notifications to ResearchGate. According to the coalition statement, ResearchGate has about 7 millions papers which have infringed copyrights.
Publishers who have joined the coalition so far are American Chemical Society (ACS), Brill, Elsevier, Wiley, and Wolters Kluwer. These publishers are mindful that the issuing takedown notices is not a viable long-term solution, hence ACS and Elsevier have since filed a lawsuit against ResearchGate.
This is not the first time a publisher has taken action against copyright infringement by academic network sites. According to Nature News, Elsevier sent 3,000 takedown notices in 2013 to scholarly networks including Academia.edu.

The winners of the Nobel Prizes for the sciences in 2017 have been announced!
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 was divided, one half awarded to Rainer Weiss, the other half jointly to Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne “for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves”.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2017 was awarded to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson “for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution”.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2017 was awarded jointly to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young “for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm”.
