The Chinese Diaspora: Selected Essay volume I and II were first published in 1998 and comprised a selection of papers first presented at the Luodi-shenggen: An International Conference on Chinese Overseas, which was organized by the Ethnic Studies Department, University of California at Berkeley, and held in San Francisco.The selected papers cover two broad areas: first, transnational issues and concerns of Chinese overseas and second, regional studies, including those of lesser known regions.
