Chinese Americans: The Paradox of the “Perpetual Foreigner” and the “Model Minority”. Within America’s racial hierachy, Chinese Americans occupy an in-between position. They are considered “model minority” for their extraordinary socioeconomic achievements while being simultaneously stereotyped as “forever foreigner” for their look and association with China. This lecture focuses on the issue of race and the prospects of Chinese in America by examining historical and contemporary contexts of international migration and host society’s reception for Chinese Americans and by analyzing ethnic and structural factors on their acculturation and integration. In particular, Professor Min Zhou addresses how Chinese Americans are preceived and positioned in American Society.
