Abstract

China’s rise, the increasing emphasis on international benchmarking in education, and the global recognition of East Asian countries’ success have brought the issue of Chinese education to the fore. Concretely, the concept of a “Chinese education model” has sparked debate and has become a major focus of education research worldwide. I will tackle this controversial issue by synthesising a diversity of perspectives from a forthcoming edited volume (Chou & Spangler, 2016) on the theme. This work reveals that Chinese education models, present in many different geographic and institutional contexts, shape social and institutional norms as well as belief systems and behaviours of individuals in China and beyond.
