Andres is a third year undergraduate at the National Institute of Education (NIE) reading a double major in English Literature and Education. He is deeply interested in the power of literature as a medium for the exploration of our personal and cultural concerns, particularly in an age wherein the algorithmically-selected short-form dominates the everyday. Beyond the strictly academic, he believes in the importance of critical and rational thinking, and in the meeting of diverging perspectives, and seeks to bring that into the classroom in the future. 

Conceptualising the Sinophone in Singaporean Sinophone short stories

Conceptualising the Sinophone in Singaporean Sinophone short stories seeks to examine the ways in which Singaporean Sinophone short stories (in translation) respond to or resist the dominant concepts and concerns of the Sinophone at large. Paying particular attention to the concept of the Chinese Diaspora and its inherent Chinese-centrism, this project examines two short stories and the ways in which the Sinophone is portrayed, conceptualised, and inflected by and within the Singaporean context. Responding to the nature of the short stories as works of translation, this project further examines the translators’ notes and the ways in which the Sinophone is conceptualised therein.
