Changing Landscape of Strategic Consulting Industry
Raghav Goel, Co-chair of the Management consulting club of Nanyang Business School (NBS) in association with the NBS Alumni Affairs Office hosted the Panel discussion session on 18 February 2021. The session’s theme was “Changing landscape of strategic consulting industry”. The event had a great response with more than 100 full-time MBA, PMBA and Nanyang Fellows MBA participants taking part in the session actively.
The event was moderated by Dr Zafar Momin, an adjunct associate professor at NBS who served as Managing Director & Partner at BCG, Kearney, and LEK Consulting. Prof Zafar is a seasoned consulting professional with over 30 years of experience.
The two panelists who felicitated the session were Olivier Muehlstein, Managing Director and Partner and MD at BCG and an alumnus of NBS MBA, as well as Avishek Nandy, partner at Bain & Company and an alumnus of Kellogg MBA and NTU.
Panelists touched on various aspects ranging from evolving identity/definition of strategy consulting to structural changes in consulting firms and evolving skills requirements. They provided broader insights into BCG and Bain’s working culture and how they have adapted to the changing dynamics of the industry over the years.
They also highlighted the advantage of specialization in one functionality to have a good career advantage in consulting. Any functionality such as Finance, operations, supply chain, marketing, data science will give the consultant the edge.
Another important takeaway is to be digitally savvy and to know what are the disruptions that are going around in various sectors and industries. This will provide the necessary acumen in adapting to the changing landscape of the industry and enable the consultant to understand the customer needs better.
The session was followed by interactive Q&A from the participants, where several key points ranging from careers to life as a consultant were answered.
Overall, the participants had a lot of takeaways from the panelists and moderators in the field of consulting industry. “The session helped me understand how the consulting industry has evolved with the rise in disruptions across various sectors,” said Prasanna Balaji, a participant.
