Empowering Students towards Better Career Decisions

The Graduate Studies Career Development Office at Nanyang Technological University’s Nanyang Business School works with students to discover, finetune, and reach their career goals. This partnership between the Office and students creates defining moments in our students’ career journey.

A pivotal moment in any student’s journey is when a job is secured. Some jobs launch careers, while others remain as just that – jobs. To help students make the most of their journey with Nanyang Business School (NBS), the Graduate Studies Career Development Office (GSCDO) works as a partner to help students launch their careers. This is achieved through a combination of large group activities and one-on-one sessions to help students identify their desired career trajectories, navigate the job market, and understand what works for them.

Over the years, GSCDO has supported and empowered the student community at NBS, successfully helping students attain different goals, including switching careers, giving careers a boost, and starting entrepreneurship journeys. “Every student is unique, and for this, we place a lot of attention on quality interactions with each individual. Through workshops and coaching sessions, we help students understand their strengths and motivations, and hone their soft skills.  All these aim to equip our students with the right mindset and skills to help them power through interviews and perform in their chosen careers”, shares Assoc Prof Ivy Kwan, who is the Assistant Dean of GSCDO.

Attesting to the benefits of the personalised support is Song Jiayi, MSc in Accountancy, Class of 2021. “My career consultant in GSCDO is now a mentor and a friend whose advice I seek out when making life-defining choices. Despite having no prior work experience in Singapore and little idea about consultancy roles, my career consultant worked closely with me to help me secure a full-time offer from EY and an internship with Economist Intelligence Unit. The people in GSCDO view every one of us an individual, and sincerely help us shape and reach our goals.”

Echoing this view is Melvin Tan, MSc Business Analytics, Class of 2021. Melvin has this to say: “The team at GSCDO is committed to helping us in our search for internships and jobs. They are constantly reaching out to us, informing us about various available roles. This, coupled with using the right tool to match employers and students, made our internship search more effective and pleasant. I secured my internship with the help of my career consultant in GSCDO, and am confident that when it comes to securing a permanent role, GSCDO will be there to help me.”

With over 3,500 global and local connections, including MNCs, SMEs, Public Service Ministries and Agencies, GSCDO works with employers to bridge and match available jobs to students who fit the aspirations and skills. This contributes to the consistent high employability among NBS students. According to Assoc Prof Kwan, the encouraging results and the winning partnership with employers mean that GSCDO will “motivate us to continually push the boundary of what we do in the Office.”
