Sensory evaluation is a skill that is not only important in the food industry for the development of food product, but also important in other industries such as FCMG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and personal care and household industries. Through this workshop, student learnt about the reason and need for conducting sensory tests, the different tests that can be applied, and the considerations to take when conducting the tests.
After learning about the theory, students had the chance to experience what it is like to be a panelist on a sensory test by distinguishing the odd sample out of 3 samples, also known as the triangle test. Students also had the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge by conducting their own sensory test using one of the three available tests (triangle, difference from control and tetrad). Through this workshop, students were able to gain additional food science related knowledge which may be beneficial to their future endeavours.
