The NTU research data repository DR-NTU (Data) was launched in November 2017.

The usage of the repository has been growing, and the functionalities have been improving during these past three years. Notable improvements include File Preview function, Viewing files in Folder Structure, and Linking Dataset.

The value of DR-NTU (Data) is beyond usage statistics. It provides a platform for data sharing, encouraging research transparency and increasing visibility of research data. Here are some examples on how NTU researchers utilise DR-NTU (Data) to showcase their research data.

Journals Ask for Underlying Data

Assoc Prof. Frederique Oggier (SPMS) created her dataset when she was in the process of submitting a paper. The dataset provided underlying data to the paper and it came with a persistent DOI link.  When the paper got accepted, Frederique then submitted the dataset’s DOI link to the publisher.

Paper: Oggier, F., Datta, A., & Phetsouvanh, S. (2020). An ego network analysis of sextortionists. Social Network Analysis and Mining, 10(44). doi:10.1007/s13278-020-00650-x

“A number of journals by now are asking to provide the data used in the paper.” – Frederique Oggier

Data Sharing Improves Research

Assoc Prof Qiu Lin and PhD Student Chen Jiayu (SSS) shared their dataset for their published paper. They acknowledged that more efforts and time were required to prepare the research data, prior to sharing them, especially in de-identifying confidential or sensitive data.

Paper: Chen, J., Qiu, L., & Ho, M. H. R. (2020). A Meta-analysis of Linguistic Markers of Extraversion: Positive Emotion and Social Process Words. Journal of Research in Personality, 89.  doi: 10.1016/j.jrp.2020.104035

“Data-sharing is definitely useful. It encourages transparency of research and increases credibility of research. Besides, data sharing may help other researchers to test their ideas by using publicly available data.” – Chen Jiayu

As the usage of the data repository continues to grow, we hope more NTU researchers can make use and benefit from the repository.
