The NTU Open Research Awards recognise and reward NTU researchers who have used open research to make their scientific contents, tools and processes more open, accessible, transparent and reproducible, or incorporated it in their teaching practices.

All NTU principal investigators, post-doc research staff, PhD students and research teams were invited to self-nominate or nominate their NTU colleagues for the inaugural NTU Open Research Awards 2022.

The results of the NTU Open Research Awards were announced at the Singapore Open Research Conference on 2 November 2022.

Prize Presentation Ceremony

The ceremony commenced with Opening Remarks by Ms Goh Su Nee, Deputy Director and Lead, Open Science and Research Services, NTU Library.

Awards were presented to the following recipients:

  • Individual Category Winner – Nanyang Asst Prof Suzy Styles
  • Team Category Winner – Volcanic Hazards and Risk Group
  • Special Mention – Digital Signal Processing Lab
  • Special Mention – Social & Affective Neuroscience Lab
  • Special Mention – TeraX Labs

Nanyang Asst Prof Suzy Styles receiving the Individual Award from Prof Fung Tat Ching. She also received a $500 cash prize.

Assoc Prof Susanna Jenkins receiving the Team Award on behalf of her team, Volcanic Hazards and Risk Group, from Assoc Prof Kevin Pethe. Her winning team also received $1,500 cash award.

Next, there were three groups that were awarded the Special Mention Award. University Librarian Ms Caroline Pang was invited on stage to present the awards to the teams, in alphabetical order.

The Special Mention Award was presented to Digital Signal Processing Lab. DSP Lab has had a long history of supporting open research and are ardent users of popular platforms like arXiv, Zenodo, and GitHub to share open resources for our research community, as well as institutional platforms such as DR-NTU for publications and DR-NTU (Data) for datasets.

The next Special Mention Award was presented to Social & Affective Neuroscience Lab. SAN Lab is committed to making the datasets collected in their studies available on their SAN Lab dataverse hosted on the institutional open access data repository DR-NTU (Data).

The next Special Mention Award was presented to TeraX Labs which believes that open research is beneficial not only for accountability but also to assist the growth of the research community by providing a foundation for others to build upon.

All the Special Mentions Award recipients received $1,000 cash prize each.

Lightning Talks

After the Awards ceremony, the two Individual Award and Team Award winners delivered lightning talks to share more with the audience on their open research works.

The first lightning talk was by Nanyang Asst Prof Suzy Styles, who delivered on “Open Research from Top to Bottom“.

Nanyang Asst Prof Suzy Styles sharing with the audience her take on the true process of open research and how we can make all the work count, especially in terms of impact.

The next lightning talk was presented by Assoc Prof Susanna Jenkins on behalf of her team, Volcanic Hazards and Risk Group.

Assoc Prof Susanna Jenkins presented on the topic titled “Supporting Disaster Risk Reduction through Open Research” where her team emphasizes the importance of open research for supporting Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) within Southeast Asia. Her presentation video can be found here.
