On 16 May 2023, the School of Social Sciences and NTU Library launched the newly re-named Professor Lim Chong Yah Reading Room and the “Professor Lim Chong Yah: Academician Extraordinaire” exhibition at the Humanities & Social Sciences Library.
Professor Joseph Liow, Dean, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences was the Guest-of-Honour at the launch event and gave the opening address.
Professor Lim Chong Yah attended the launch and delivered an address as well.
Professor Lim Chong Yah Reading Room
The Professor Lim Chong Yah Reading Room, previously the Singapore Collection Room, was re-named in recognition of Professor Lim Chong Yah’s long illustrious career as an academic, his indelible impact on Singapore’s economic development, higher education, and regional cooperation and development, as well as his strong affection for NTU.
The renaming of the room was spearheaded by the School of Social Sciences and NTU Library, and approved by the Ministry of Education through the University Advancement Office.
The room is designed to provide a conducive environment for study and discussion, and contains permanent displays highlighting important milestones in Professor Lim’s career and showcasing some of the awards and accolades he has received.
The Professor Lim Chong Yah Reading Room showcases the collection of his donated books, personal artefacts and various paraphernalia, highlighting the most important achievements and significant moments in his career and life. It will bring you closer to the man who has contributed much of his self to Singapore.
“Professor Lim Chong Yah: Academician Extraordinaire” roving exhibition
Launched together with the room was an additional roving exhibition titled “Professor Lim Chong Yah: Academician Extraordinaire”, put together by a collaboration between the School of Social Sciences and NTU Library to honour Professor Lim’s legacy.
The roving exhibition is currently on display at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library.
About Professor Lim Chong Yah
Professor Lim Chong Yah is an eminent economist and academic who concurrently holds the title of Emeritus Professor of Economics at both the National University of Singapore (NUS) and NTU. He is also the inaugural Albert Winsemius Chair Professor at the School of Social Sciences. Outside the university, Professor Lim’s service as founding Chairman of the National Wages Council (NWC) for 29 years (1972-2001) and founding Chairman of the Skills Development Fund Advisory Council (1979-1982) helped shape the economic and national development of Singapore.
