Videography project

Introduction: Following the trail of our first WoW event titled “What’s Wrong with Science” we decided to expand it into a series entitled ‘What’s wrong with – ’. An event requires a lot of time and effort to organize hence we decided to make a video series where we film short videos of interviewers interviewing  people on a selected topic. To decide we put up a list of potential topics in TEDxNTU facebook group to get a consensus as to which topics can be selected for the project. Topics with most number of votes were ‘What’s wrong with the Gender Myth’, ‘What’s wrong with Social Media’, ‘What’s wrong with Entrepreneurship’ and ‘What’s wrong with Ranking universities’. Since ‘What’s wrong with the Gender Myth’ got the maximum number of popular votes we decided to start with it as the theme for our pilot videography project.

Duration: We seek to release the first set of videos on the ‘Gender myth’ topic by October.

Procedure: It was decided for a particular topic we will interview interviewees whose work is relevant to the theme of the topic. On an average we will be looking into 5 interviewees who will be interviewed, discussing on intriguing issues of the selected topic in front of camera. First we will contact the interviewees prior to the interviews and provide them with an outline of the theme and potential questions which may be asked during the interviews. If the potential interviewee is comfortable with the topic we set up a date for interviews. These videos will be shot with rented professional video cameras in natural light settings and on locations which are preferred and agreed upon by both interviewee and our crew. After editing completed videos will be uploaded to Youtube channel of NTU WoW and to Facebook WoW page. If agreed upon by CCO of NTU we can run the videos on big TV screens in NTU campus.

Potential questions:

  • Was/is there a gender myth in your professional field? If so, what is it and how have you overcome it in order to succeed in your field?
  • What real gender biases exist in your field? What makes you different from other women that struggle to overcome typical gender biases?
  • If women are under rated in society, there may be a psychological aspect/component that prevents women from achieving the same goals as men. So, who supported you to believe in yourself to overcome social pressure?
  • Is there any gender bias that you still struggle with professionally or socially?
  • As a woman in science/business/field, did you have some role model in your field?

Format: Each video will be of 18-20 mins long atmost. Prior to the release of the first series we intend to release 1 or 2 teaser videos for publicity purpose.
