Student Projects

Over the duration of one semester we have come together for the Exhibition Design (AP9040) course in NTU, School of Art, Design and Media, to discuss current issues and concepts in exhibition-making with a particular focus on design approaches and interpretative techniques that communicate knowledge and engage the audiences. The course approaches the definition of the exhibition space as a “narrative environment” and the evolving notion of interpreting and displaying cultural artifacts, analyzing the physical, sensorial and conceptual dimension of the museum space. Within this relatively brief period of time students also conducted independent research and the development of creative design strategies combining the understanding of space, storytelling, collections and media in conjunction with ongoing museum programs in Singapore. Students also attended webinars and workshops as part of the NTU-Smithsonian Institute exchange, gaining valuable ideas which can be applied in their group projects.

The knowledge and skills required to participate in the development of such exhibitions are specialized, and many professionals with different roles are needed: historic or scientific advisors, content developers, architects, designers, multimedia developers. Students who participated in this course come from different Master’s degree programmes in NTU, such as the MA Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices, MA (Research) School of Art Design and Media, Msc in Information Studies and Master of Mass Communication.
