Te Papa Collections Online

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is the national museum of New Zealand. Their collections online contain information of more than 500,000 works of art. Among them, more than 30000 have downloadable images for reuse in high resolution. Users can search by keywords.

Google developed a visual language that “synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science”, which they called “material design”. Google retains a living document of specifications of the material design. As part of the specifications, Google provides a library of system icons, created based on Google’s design principles, for download. Users can search or browse the icons arranged by categories.

Developed and designed by food photographer, Jakub Kapusnak, FoodieFeed is “a resource of free high resolution food pictures available to download and use on your website, blog, in your presentation, your website template, WP demo, in design project for your client or just anywhere else”. Users can search by keywords or browse by different categories.

Raumrot.com

Raumrot.com presents “free, handpicked stockphotos” for commercial and personal uses. As of July 2015, there are 681 of such images. Users can browse by categories or by special image sets.

NASA’s Earth Observatory Images

As part of the EOS Project Science Office located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the mission of the Earth Observatory is “to share with the public the images, stories, and discoveries about the environment, Earth systems, and climate that emerge from NASA research, including its satellite missions, in-the-field research, and models”. Users can do a keyword search or browse images by different categories. Users can also generate images of global maps to explore key parts of the Earth’s climate system. The images are based on data provided by the NASA satellites.

Split Shire

Developed by Italian photographer and graphic designer, Daniel Nanescu, Split Shire provides copyright-free photographs for designers, bloggers, social marketeers and commercial companies. Users can search or browse images by categories.

Free Nature Stock

Built by web designer and developer, Adrian Pelletier, Free Nature Stock provides free public domain images that focus on nature. The site is updated with a new photo daily. Users can search or browse the images through the Archive.

PLiXS Image Database

Founded by a startup based in Switzerland, PLiXS is a database of free high resolution images. As of August 2015, there are close to 3,400 images, contributed by photographers around the world. Users can search or filter their search by photo filters and categories.

Skitterphoto

Skitterphoto provides photographs that are taken by three photographers based in Groningen, The Netherlands. Since the platform launched in 2014, a photo is uploaded every single day. Users can search or browse by categories.

Freepik

From vectors to PSD files, icons and stock photos, Freepik provides resources for graphic and web design. As of August 2015, the site has received more than 440 million downloads. Developed by “a team of designers, developers, professionals of marketing, communication and administration” based in Spain, Freepik offers two types of content: free and exclusive graphic resources by Freepik, and graphic resources belonging to others. Users can search or browse by categories.

British Library Flickr Commons

Since 2013, British Library released more than 1 million images to Flickr Commons. The images were obtained from the Library’s digitised collection of 65,000 books of the 17th, 18th and 19th century. The release of these images indicates the Library’s desire “to improve knowledge of and about them, to enable novel and unexpected ways of using them, and to begin working with researchers to explore and interpret large scale digital collections”. The images are arranged by different themes, such as book covers, illustrated letters, maps, flora and children book illustrations.

Vintage Printable

Vintage Printable provides images that are believed to be on public domain or out of copyright. Most of the images are focused on vintage naturalist or scientific illustrations. Users can search or browse by different categories.

Travel Coffee Book

Travel Coffee Book is a photo blog that provides photographs captured by photographers around the world. They are mainly travel photographs. 10 new photos will be added every 10 days.

ISO Republic

ISO Republic provides exclusive stock images for creatives. It is founded in 2014 by English photographer and designer, Tom Eversley. The mission is to “provide high-quality images to be used by designers, developers, bloggers, marketers and social media teams”.

Epicantus Photo Archive

Epicantus provides images that are captured by visual and UX designer, Daria Nepriakhina and other photographers.

Jay Mantri Photo Archive

Inspired by Unsplash, designer Jay Mantri provides photographs for others to “make magic”. According to the blog, seven photos will be added every Thursday.

Pexels

Developed by German web developers, Pexels provided handpicked stock photos from free image sources, such as Unsplash and Gratisography. To date, there are over 3,000 images that are on Creative Commons zero (CC0) license. Users can search or browse the images.

Walters Art Museum Online Collection

The collection of Walters Art Museum contains thousands of art works from the third millennium B.C to the 20th century, ranging from mummies to arms and armor, from old master paintings to Art Nouveau jewelry around the globe and across ages. Through their online collections, users can search or browse images in several ways, which include category, date, creator, medium and tags. Users can also login using their Facebook account to create their own online collections.
