Iconology of the Wayfarer Triptych – Detail
#567
Ragged poor man from The Pedlar
In Bosch’s painting, the peddler has the rather unhappy choice between joining the people in the inn, or walking alone as a stranger. In the Hymn of the Pearl, the Saviour is in the same position. As long as he remains unsullied by the corruption of the inn, he experiences the same isolation as Bosch’s wayfarer. He describes his condition of separateness when he says: Since I was one and kept to myself, I was a stranger to my fellow-dwellers in the inn Jonas, 1963, 113] (p. 164).
