Hanging pancake from Ship of Fools
The cooking of pancakes and waffles for costumed groups was often depicted as the monthly activity for February, the month of Carnival, in print series [Bloemaert, After 1635; Mooij, 1992, 82, no. 4]… one of the figures in a Battle between Carnival and Lent, engraved by Schelte Bolswert after Boetius Bolswert [Bolswert, ca. 1610-1620] wears both pancakes and waffles as her belt as attributes of the Carnival season.
