I am an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the MSc in Applied Gerontology programme at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I earned my PhD in Sociology from Arizona State University and completed my post-doctoral fellowship at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. Prior to pursuing sociology at the graduate level, I obtained a B.Eng (First Class) degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Madras.

My research centres on the social and demographic dynamics of Asia, examining how populations respond to societal, political, and economic shifts. With a particular focus on South and Southeast Asia, my work explores marriage, divorce, families, households, and ageing. My findings have been published in leading journals such as Population and Development Review, Demographic Research, Population, and Social Science & Medicine.

I am actively engaged in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and postgraduate students. My courses cover population studies, social policy, social statistics, quantitative research methods, and gerontology. I am honoured to have been recognised with the Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award, a university-wide award acknowledging inspirational teaching and the impact teachers have on their students.

My academic engagement includes roles at both institutional and international levels. I was elected to the University Senate twice, served on the Senate Steering Committee, and as Vice President of the Asian Population Association. I was the sole Associate Editor for Asian Population Studies for nearly a decade and have done extensive peer review work for over 60 journals, publishers, and grant agencies, as well as being involved in organising national and international conferences.
