The design was to be modular, meaning different component will form different unit. For example: An air condition will be a unit, the growing area for the plant will be a unit.
The modular design would also allow for the customization. For example, a growing unit would be useful for a single person household. However, it would be able to expand to three or four growing units for a larger family without the needs to buy the entire units.
The environment control would be targeted depending on the types of plant to allow for the optimised environment for the plant to grow. Hence, it would ensure to be palatable even if the plant was not suitable to be grow in the climate of Singapore.
For example, lettuce grow in Singapore’s hot and humid climate will be bitter and hard. However, in controlled environment, it would be much more tender and juicier despite being grown in Singapore. To add on, we can target the environment for one unit while having different environment for another unit. This allowed different crops to be grow in the system.
As this is a hydroponic system, meaning plants will grow through water instead of growing through soil, we will be dispensing soluble nutrients to the plants to grow. The amount of nutrients dispensed, and the cycle would depend on the type of crops.
Lastly, we aimed to make this an automatic process to allow more people to get into hydroponic plants. This machine would automatically help to grow the crops where the only hands-on would be replenishing the water for water cycle, draining the water after water cycle as well as inputting the types of crop you are growing to allow for targeted environment.
