Smoking and Breathing at ease
Data from the Global Action to End Smoking suggests that in 2022, 16.5% of Singapore’s population used tobacco products. Cigarette smoking at home generates negative externalities, particularly in high-density public housing estates. Smoke particles can travel across 10 storeys of a flat, as per simulations by the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Neighbours in the immediate proximity are affected by the smell and chemicals in second hand smoke. However, there are no regulatory limitations on smoking within private residences. Neighbours have to resort to sealing their windows and using air purifiers or air conditions to reduce the disturbance from second-hand smoke. But according to the Ministry of Health, there is currently no air filters in the market which have been proven to be effective in filtering out the harmful effects of second-hand smoke in private homes.
Breatheasy hopes to address this problem, to allow smokers their freedom to smoke while protecting the neighbours from second-hand smoke.
