Drafts and Prototype

Initial Phase

Draft 1

Our very first prototype was designed for non-smoking neighbours who were heavily disturbed by second-hand smoke which drifted in through windows. It consisted of a small filtration device that will ideally sit on the ledge of a window, as well as a windshield that covers the whole window. Our aim was to purify atmospheric air, before releasing odour-less and toxin-free air into the house. However, upon discussion, several issues were raised.

  1. Difficulties in attaching our filtration device to all types of windows, and safety concerns that may arise from attachment failures.
  2. The feasibility of sealing all windows air-tight.
  3. The  efficiency of such a small filtration device

Draft 2

Our next draft looked similar to a standing air purifier, with the addition of a suction pipe that ideally directs all smoke into through the filtration system. We will also consider the type of filters that should be used.

Draft 3

Changes made from the previous draft include

  1. Fans will be placed as the last unit to direct air flow through the filters.
  2. 4 small fans will be used in replacement of 1 large fan, due to cost constraints.
  3. Tubes be printed to connect air flow between the filters and fans.
  4. Flat filters will be adopted for this project given their versatility.
  5.  A cuboidal body will be used to accommodate to the shape of our filters.

Prototype

Our prototype will consist of 6 fans, 1 HEPA filter, 2 Carbon filters and 1 Zeolite filter.
