Primary research on the fine particles, carcinogenic compounds and chemicals components in second-hand smoke was done.
- Fine particles – largely PM2.5 that penetrate deep into the lungs,
- Nicotine – Addictive substance
- Carcinogens – Cancer-causing chemicals such as Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), aromatic amines and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) including benzene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. These are also the main odour-causing chemicals.
Note: Progress in the first 3 weeks were relatively slow as members were away at different period for their Overseas Learning Trips. Most work was done remotely.
