Week 8

29 June – 5 July

We observed from tests done in previous weeks that the our device could only capture air from straight ahead. We focused on designing and incorporating additional parts to widen the range of suction.

Testing of suction ability

We designed and tested 2 nozzles for their suction power and range.

We found that a burning stick of incense can only produce a small amount of smoke in the form of a thin stream, which does not accurately represent second-hand smoke. Instead, we collected smoke in a bottle to simulate a puff of gas. VOC sensor was placed into a plastic bag containing outlet gas.

The first nozzle provided sufficient suction and increase the range of suction a little.

However, the sunflower nozzle resulted in a large drop in suction power, possibly due to the sharp change in air flow direction.
