Working Principle

The Fan

San Ace B97 Series

Centrifugal Fan, 24VDC Supply Voltage, 6850RP Speed Rating, 38.88W Rated Power

  • Airwatts for fan = 34.35AW; Air flow of single fan = 1.61 m^3/min; Static pressure of single fan = 1280pa

Parallel flow configuration was chosen to increase total airflow of entire fan system.

  • 6 of such fans can provide sufficient Airwatts for our system.
    • Total Airflow = 6 x Air flow of single fan = 9.66 m^3/min
    • Total static pressure = Static pressure of single fan = 1280pa
    • Airwatts = 206.08 AW which exceeds the ~100AW requirement for a Low pressure-High airflow system

The Filters

Types of filter used, component of second-hand smoke targetted

  1. HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter
    • Mechanical filter that removes PM2.5, Tar, Ash, Nicotine droplets and more.
    • Particles as small as 0.1 μm adhere to the filter’s fibers and are retained.
  2. Carbon filter
    • Chemical filter that removes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, benzene and toluene.
    • Activated carbon is highly porous and has a large surface area, providing ample space for particles to adhere to.
    • Once all pores are saturated, the activated carbon filter must be replaced.
  3. Zeolite filter
    • Chemical filter that removes water, ammonia, heavy metal, hydrogen sulfides, VOCs including Formaldehyde, Pyridine and Nitrosamines.
    • Zeolites are crystalline microporous aluminosilicates. Its framework consists of corner-sharing XO4 tetrahedra where X are typically Si or Al atoms.
    • Polar substances adsorb onto the zeolites in the same manner as on activated carbon.

The Inlet tubing

Listed are some considerations made when purchasing the tube.

  • Tubing with an overly large diameter will affect the flow rate.
  • Tubing has to be compressible so our product can remain compact when not in use.
  • Tubing should be flexible and of sufficient length to be directed to the smokers’ nose and mouth, where smoke is exhaled
