Our current claw design was able to crack the egg reliably on the claw, but we often ended up with the egg shattering in strange patters on top. As this could affect the position of the egg on the spike, we decided to create a plunger that was capable of moulding to the shape of the egg.

We created a depression on the plunger, which we filled with a melamine sponge and taped in place. This allowed the plunger to conform to the curvature of the egg to some degree, resulting in a much cleaner impalement and break of the egg.
