[#5] Building a 3D Printer

When: 30 May 2019, 9.30am to 12pm
Members present: Alexis, Claudia, Vanessa

Tony was gracious enough to give us an Ender 3 3D Printer to assemble. All the parts were still in its delivery box, untouched and ready to be built into something more. The 3D Printer kit even came with all the basic tools we needed to build the printer. Leveraging on Alexis’ great experience following IKEA manuals to build furniture and our quick wits,Β  the three of us worked on it all morning, following the sometimes cryptic instructions given in the manual.

Finally, after 3 hours, we were done!

Here’s a quick timelapse of the last part of our building process too! πŸ™‚

Personally, I was slightly daunted at first, thinking that building a 3D Printer would be impossible in a single day, let alone just one morning, as Tony said would be possible. But it was heartening to see for myself that sometimes, the most complex ideas can be materialised in simple ways. The kit indeed delivered; our end product was a 3D Printer, featuring just the bare essentials. The minimalism of the design is advantageous to us, as we can easily modify and swap out parts to our needs and fancies. Of course, the first to go would be the extruder, that would normally melt and output plastic for the final 3D plastic model creation. To accomplish our project goals, we would need to exchange the extruder for a needle instead.

We made good progress today 🌟 We plan to conduct research on embroidery software available online, to either find a suitable one to use or adapt to our specific needs. Til we meet again next Monday!
