Work we done throughout the course of this project ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ

Follow us as we go through many many many prints and reprints of our parts, making each part thicker or thinner, sawing acrylics, buying the wrong thickness of acrylic, laser cutting the acrylics and testing our prototypes! 💪💪

Planning Phase:

Week 1 (01/06 – 07/06)

02/06/2020

  • First meeting online, all members present
  • Brainstormed and went over different potential ideas for our project (hoverboard, water/air filtration systems, creation of artificial muscle fibres)
  • Each presented our own idea and evaluated the feasibility of each (considering time and equipment constraints)

04/06/2020

  • Meeting with Dr. Ho on zoom
  • Settled on the topic (air filtration) and focus (heightened mobility) of our project
  • Discussed certain materials that will be needed for and characteristics of our final product
  • Looked up 2 research papers each to further our understanding and knowledge of the subject (mainly for considerations of material required in the product)
  • Came up with a list of potential risks that the project poses

Week 2 (08/06 – 14/06)

10/06/2020

  • Second meeting online, all members present
  • Each presented on what was found from our respective research papers and how to incorporate what was found into project (info above)
  • Drew schematic of the prototype
  • Searched online for possible materials to purchase as well as prices of each item (hepa filter for fine particles, air pumps, activated carbon, specific list below)
  • Came up with possible materials that we could provide
  • Completed risk assessment which was to be done by 21/06/2020
  • Contacted Prof Soo Han Sen, asking him to mentor our project

Week 3 (15/06 – 21/06)

16/06/2020

  • Met with Prof Soo Han Sen, willing to provide us with mentorship
  • Advised the direction that our project would take

Week 4 (22/06 – 28/06)

23/06/2020

  • Third meeting online, Cherelle and Stark present
  • Discussed and submitted risk assessment
  • Decided to focus on making the U-turn first (as a reference)
  • Discussed the materials that we need to buy (sponges) and bought them on Shopee
  • Next meeting to be when sponges arrive

Unfortunately our risk assessment was rejected the first time as it was not specific enough to our project (╥﹏╥)

BUT! Through careful refinement of the initially submitted risk assessment as well as the addition of extra risks that we took into account, we were able to get our second risk assessment accepted! ٩(˘◡˘)۶

– Planning Phase Over –

Building Phase:

Week 5 (29/06 – 05/07)

  • Arrival of purchased material (melamine sponges and aquarium sponges)

Week 6 (06/07 – 12/07)

07/07/2020

  • First time going to laboratory
  • Printed out parts for the prototype (started with pre-filter parts and U-turn parts)
  • Finished slides for first progress report
  • Delegated who to present what (for the progress meeting)
  • Tried to saw acrylics for the container but they turned out bad and generally unusable ( ˘︹˘ )

Stark sawing acrylics

My failed attempt at sawing (;´・`)>

08/07/2020

  • Second day in the Lab!
  • Continued printing parts for the prototype (printed successful pre-filter parts that could be utilised with surgical mask material, printed more U-turn parts)
  • Many parts were not up to standard so we had to reprint many times (had many unfortunate prints that caused printer to be unable to print)
  • Went to rep room to use laser cutter so we could use it to cut acrylics and form our box (printed all sides of the box)

Pre-filter assembled 😀

Pre-filter side view!

Week 7 (13/07 – 19/07)

14/07/2020

  • Tried to assemble the acrylic box (using double sided tape for now)
  • Printed more parts

Our prototype box!!

15/07/2020

  • More laser cutting!
  • More 3D printing!

*Most of the processes that we are currently doing are quite repetitive because we are in trial-and-error phase (need to refine the prototype!!)

Laser cutter at work ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

Week 8 (20/07 – 26/07)

20/07/2020

  • pumps for prototype arrived 👌

22/07/2020

  • Printing parts again today 😪 (but due to having lesser to do today, we were able to leave slightly earlier 🤗)
  • Glued acrylic box together using acrylic glue bought from Art Friend (suspected to be diluted chloroform HAHA)
  • Glued individual components of the filter into the prototype, including U-turn as well as pre-filter

Week 9 (27/07 – 02/08)

28/07/2020

  • Finished prototype 👏👏
  • Tested how waterproof the prototype was (we did this in the handicap toilet, blocked the sink drain and filled it with water before dunking our prototype in the water 😓) and it turned out that certain points of our prototype were leaking water
  • Met up with Dr Ho to discuss the most recent progress of the project as well as ask him for any suggestions on how to improve the prototype (with regard to the leakages, cork sealant was suggested to us and it was available in the lab)
  • Discussed on starting testing phases

* asked by Dr Ho on what we would like to achieve with our prototype and its real life applications of the model

– (First) Building Phase Over –

Testing Phase:

Week 10 (03/08 – 09/08)

03/08/2020

  • Fourth online meeting (also first online meeting in a while since we usually meet in the laboratory after circuit breaker was over)
  • Planning of experiments for testing (procedures and materials needed for testing)
  • Preparation and separation of roles for second presentation
