Hello everyone! We took a short hiatus as many of us were away on school trips and/or personal holidays. While the summer holidays have begun, our Special Projects portfolio organised a final CNYSC event right after our final examinations. Without further ado, let us find out more about Yang and Free.

The final day of our examinations ended with Yang and Free (read: Young and Free) – a bowling competition for us to unwind and meet up with friends before the long summer break.
The ride down to HomeTeamNS Balestier was filled with endless chatter and plans to meet up during the holidays. Stepping off the coach, we were greeted by piles of pizza and fried chicken for dinner. As we picked up our bowling shoes and fussed over the bowling balls, we settled quickly into our lanes. Our host soon picked up his mic, announcing the start of a five minute practice match. With many first timers around, shrieks soon filled the room, many attempting to achieve the best angle in order to “get at least a spare”.

To our despair, the five minutes passed much too quickly. We wouldn’t be ready for at least another hour but alas, the competition had begun. Our names flashed across the screen and the first bowlers threw their balls with some confidence. It wasn’t a bad start.
Before long, we clearly had a winner. Ryan Chin, one of our second years, managed a five bagger (i.e. five strikes in a row) despite being a novice bowler. And when he didn’t, he cleared his spares with pinpoint precision. Every throw he made was met with enthusiastic cheers and disbelief, and he was well-deserving of the “Best Bowler” award which he later received.

For the rest of us, we simply swung with hopes of not getting a gutter ball. Quite surprisingly, many managed strikes and spares early in the game. When we did get gutter balls, we were greeted with encouraging pats on our backs. There were awards including “The Most Flamboyant Bowler” and “Best Instagram Poses” for those who were new to bowling.
Three hours passed by surprisingly quickly, and the last ten minutes were met with many frantic throws as we attempted to make the best use of whatever little time we had left. But it was getting late, and we had to move on with the program. Some members of the 8th CNYSC Executive Committee had prepared a short video clip, showcasing pictures of every event we had thus far. Nostalgic and somewhat emotional (especially for our seniors in their final year), it was a time for us to reflect on our achievements over the past academic year.
Reflecting on events over the year
It may have been the final event of AY2015/2016 and for some, the last event of their undergraduate years, but as we sat together in the bowling alley, we were assured that we would always be part of a big family.
