The 21st B.C. (bef. CNYang) 2017
BY TAN TIMOTHY JAMES CO
What better way to kick-start the beginning of the second semester with a sentimental Back to School event jointly organised by the Social and Welfare, Special Projects, and Press and Publicity Committees of the CN Yang Scholars’ Programme (CNYSP)?
The event commenced with a scrumptious dinner followed by finding our group members who held puzzle pieces that completed school logos, some of which we have never seen before. Nonetheless, once we finally organised ourselves into groups, we played ‘Don’t Forget the Lyrics’ (School Song Edition), which involved intelligently guessing which institution’s song is playing and the lyrics that continued a short segment of a school song.

We then enjoyed a heartfelt rendition of two Chinese songs by Hui Ting – 当你 (When You) and 心墙 (Heart Wall), followed by Giang singing “This is Gospel” by Panic! at the Disco; both performances were met with supportive cheering and applause from fellow students.

After the vocal performances, we were invited to do PW, which stood for Project Work Pass Words, where we had to pass a mouthful (of words), figuratively and literally. A couple of students in each group had to stuff their mouths with as much fluffy marshmallows as they can. I started gulping down the marshmallows once I felt uncomfortable after struggling with five marshmallows in my mouth but sadly, my groupmate had to spit out all five of his marshmallows. This game led to the introduction of a new initiative by the Special Projects Committee of CNYSP – the CNYSP Records, which is a compilation of records, no matter how bizarre such as eating a McDonalds’ ice cream cone whole and stuffing eleven marshmallows into one’s mouth (both of which are held by Darren at the time of typing this article), held by our very own scholars. We then proceeded to watch ten eager chapteh players to see who could kick the most number of times without dropping the chapteh for another scholar to be added to the hall of fame, which emerged to be Wei En.

After a fun-filled couple of games, we then listened to Hadi’s rendition of “Always With Me” (Spirited Away) on his guitar, which created an air of nostalgia for those who are fond of the Japanese anime since young. An entertaining dance-and-beatbox performance by Nitin and Darren closed the performances of the night. It was such an enjoyable event seeing all these scholars showcasing their talents!

The final game of the night, ‘How Well Do You Know Your Prof’, drew much shock and surprise from the audience as students were perplexed at some of the Professors’ past, such as one Physics professor, who graduated with a degree in Chinese.

The event ended with the much-awaited Lucky Draw, where the prizes include a memo mug, a thermal flask, and a comforter. Winners of the prizes will never miss a reminder (hopefully), can drink hot or cold water any time of the day, and can sleep more comfortably in hall.
Indeed, it was a nostalgic night that was filled with enthusiasm and laughter from the participants. A huge thank you to the organisers of the event that brought us back to our sunny pre-university days!
