It’s that time of the semester again. The mad rush to complete assignments, last-minute cramming for the “midterm” quizzes on week 13, the looming research report submission and presentation. And of course, the final examinations that follow immediately after… Well, don’t look so down, because the Business Management (BizMag) Portfolio of CN Yang Scholars’ Club (CNYSC) has prepared a specially curated Examination Welfare Pack (EWP) for every CN Yang scholar!
Held immediately after “Undercooked!!!”, the last CNYSC event before the final examinations, the EWP collection was held in CresPion Seminar Room 1, making it very convenient for most of us to collect our EWP. In line with our EcoPromise, this EWP distribution was a “Bring Your Own Bag” event, enabling us to do our part in conserving resources while enjoying the EWP prepared by BizMag. Our scholars were definitely very happy with the EWP they collected, judging from the smiles sported by many as they ferried away their own recyclable bags bursting at the seams with snacks, stationery, vouchers and more!
Of course,
the success of this EWP would not have been possible without the generosity of
our sponsors! This year, the CN Yang Scholars club is happy to announce that we
are working with four brilliant sponsors for our EWP. They are none other than
Swensen’s, DSO, EscapeHunt and GOGOVAN!
Swensen’s,
a household name in Singapore, gave every scholar vouchers that can be used at various
Swensen’s restaurant outlets throughout the island. We thank Swensen’s for their
great deals which can be used by our scholars for a pick-me-up during the
stressful studying period or post-exam celebratory meals.
Meanwhile, as Singapore’s largest defence research and development (R&D) organisation, DSO National Laboratories (DSO) has generously provided CNYSC with enough foolscap pads for every scholar. Many scholars have expressed their delight when they saw the foolscap pads, a highly valued item that can be used for summaries, drawings, past-year papers and calculations during this studying period.
Of course, the best part of any examination period is that feeling we get right after the end of the last paper. We would like to thank EscapeHunt for providing discounts to their mini theme park, role playing experience based on the classic “escape room” games which will be used by our scholars for some well-deserved downtime.
Finally, as
it is Semester 2 of the Academic Year, many scholars would be moving out of
hall for the summer. Usually, it is a pain to move all our barang-barang from hall back home. This
time round, our scholars would not face such a problem, as GOGOVAN has kindly
provided a service meant for this very purpose. What’s more, they have
generously given us $10 off our first move-out service! We would like to thank
GOGOVAN for the great deals and services offered to our scholars.
On behalf of the CN Yang Scholars’ Club, we would like to thank our sponsors for supporting our scholars during this final push for the examinations. All the best to all scholars for their upcoming assignments and examinations!
Undercooked!!! was a food-themed centric finale event organized by Social and Welfare (SnW) portfolio in attempt to bring about joy and fun before the last stretch of stressful preparation by the Scholars for their final examinations. During this event, various carnival games such as Toss the Light Rings and Knock’em All were set up for the scholars with a fun element added as the scholars competed with each other to break the high scores rather than playing individually.

Towards the end of the event, we played an exciting finale game, which was “Too Many Cooks Spoil the Sandwich”. This finale activity was one of the highlights in this finale event where creativity is key in this friendly competition to create the most interesting miniature food products from paper ingredient templates. Thereby, earning themselves faction points that will contribute to the final ranking of the factions in this event.

All in all, most of the scholars had fun and managed to unwind themselves momentarily during this short but fun-filled period of time. Hopefully, Undercooked!!! managed to recharge the CN Yang scholars during this stressful period of time in University.
30th March marked a very special day for all the Premier
Scholars in NTU, the annual Premier Scholars Program Sports Day is here!
Everyone was up early and preparing for the sports day even before the event
began. Our excitement warmed up the atmosphere despite the morning drizzle in
NTU. While most of the scholars are not particularly sports-inclined, we still
did our best in scoring and cheering our friends on.
Cheering the CN Yang “Dream Team” on for Ultimate Frisbee!
Even though in the end of the day, my team did not manage to
win anything, but the time spent with good friends in the program reminded me
that no matter how tough the journey ahead of us is, we will all face it
together.
On top of that, all the funny moments and bloopers of the event will be sure to stay in our memories for a long time to come!
Oops… a misplaced REP pass wins the Frisbee game for CN Yang!
The CNYSC Dinner and Dance 2019 was a humbling experience for me and the entire committee. The decision to hold the event at Jurong Bird Park in luscious greenery was one of the best decisions made indeed! In comparison to past venues in hotels like The Hilton, the park allowed us an opportunity to present to the scholars a different take on Dinner and Dance.

The event boasted a five-course Western meal, entrancing performances, multiple photobooths, lucky draw prizes and door gifts.
A toast to CN Yang!
All these added to put bright smiles on the scholars faces and it was the most rewarding experience for all of us.

We all are still grateful for the scholars support and we hope that they have all had a memorable experience at CNYSC Dinner and Dance 2019!
The Resume workshop was certainly a helpful and
eye-opening experience. As an undergraduate student, I have had my eyes set on
resume making tips for a while. It is an important skill that is applicable to
anyone in search for a job.
One of the most important tips was to tailor and
frame my accomplishments in a way that is attractive and relevant to the
employer. One’s resume is more than just the consolidation one’s skills and
talents and it is definitely not an autobiography. Instead, it should be seen as
a quick and brief overview of one’s skills that are relevant to the job.
Key components of a resume
Presentation of the information is also
crucial. Typos, formatting errors can be deal breakers in the highly
competitive job landscape as they can be seen as evidence of a lazy person with
poor attention to detail. In the workshop, Leo from CAO gave us the opportunity
to review several sample resumes. He also gave us time to discuss and choose
who we would choose as a potential employee. This is an interesting exercise
since viewing job hunts from the employer’s perspective is not intuitive. Stepping
in the employer’s shoes is also extremely helpful in clearing past
misconceptions.
Online presence is also important in securing
corporate networking opportunities. LinkedIn is an online platform that is
increasingly relevant to the 21st century. Not only do job hunters,
but also CEOs and industry leaders are on the prowl for potential
collaborations and networking opportunities. LinkedIn is the platform of the
future and I believe too few people know about it today. I will definitely
update my profile regularly and look to spread the word on the platform’s
importance in the modern day and age.
Jeremy listening intently at the workshop
Overall, the resume workshop was not a
disappointment as I have learnt plenty. I will keep Leo’s words in mind and
work on previous drafts of my resume.
During Master Chef Yang, we were taught how to make three (relatively) simple dishes – focaccia with salmon rillettes, pan-seared ribeye and tiramisu. We observed the chef create these dishes and then recreated them ourselves. It was easier since all ingredients were prepared for us, but there were still many things to look out for.
The instructor, Chef Andre, showing the scholars how to pipe out the cream for tiramisu, truly a work of fine art
Having a group of 5 cook with me made it much easier and I succeeded tremendously (in my opinion). I was absolutely delighted when I tasted the results of our labour.

I also learned the inner workings of a restaurant kitchen and can now appreciate my food better. At least I know how steak is prepared. Although the event only brought my personal repertoire of dishes from zero to three, I felt that it inspired me to attempt more delicious dishes in hall.
The CN Yang Scholars’ Club (CNYSC) is set up and run by the scholars of the CN Yang Scholars Programme. The management committee is elected by the scholars on an annual basis.
