Halloween 2018 – Night at the Underworld

When you cross ghosts, skeletons and dank memes, you get our CN Yang Scholars’ Club’s Halloween event, organised by the club’s Social and Welfare Portfolio. The event was definitely one of the highlights of the semester, and not just because of all the goodies that we get during the event cough but also all the exciting games we got to play!

Everyone was clad in all kinds of quirky costumes, including Harry Potter costumes, pumpkins, some spooky gothic costumes, even Min Htoo made a budget meme costume for himself. We were split into several groups to roam around the hall playing at the game booths, so the first booth for our group was the origami folding booth where we had to fold our own photo frame and decorate it with the stickers there. Next was the card games in which the game was designed to fit the theme of Halloween, and while it was slightly confusing at first, we all managed to get the hang of it and enjoyed the game a lot.

Min Htoo or Meme Htoo?

Next came the food bingo game where each number is represented by a food item, and we had to place different food items onto the grid and we had to eat the specific food item that was called out until we got an empty row, column or diagonal. I especially enjoyed how we would always sneak a bite of the snacks when we’re filling up the grid, essentially making it a “Free Snacks” booth. Then, we also had a “Shoot the Babies” game where we had to shoot some eerie, Chucky-ish-looking baby dolls hanging from the walls or on the table with a toy bow which looked like something that came out of Sailor Moon. While the bow was being abused by people trying to shoot the babies, the bullets were prone to getting stuck and every time that happened someone would shout “Rifle jam, IA (immediate action)” which made it that much funnier.

There was also a photo booth that came with a twist: people from two teams were numbered and a story is told, the people corresponding to the numbers in the story had to enter the frame and one team had to push the other team out of the frame. Everyone’s hands and feet were literally everywhere from pushing each other to covering each other’s faces, and when the photos were finally taken it was hilarious to see what kind of expressions we made, truly a meme factory. Finally, we had to do a “magic carpet” race (which was actually just a trash bag) to the centre of the hall and find some items within three boxes stuffed with newspaper. Our desperation came to a point where we couldn’t find the items in the boxes, so we flipped the whole box and newspaper flew everywhere, that was epic.

If you can’t beat ’em… 😉

Before concluding, we played a Kahoot game of cartoon characters and had our lucky draw. The winners won lots of lucrative prizes (of which I wasn’t one of them OOF) and with a group photo, the event came to an end. It was really a well-deserved break for everyone after weeks and weeks of slugging through the semester and allowed us to enjoy ourselves before restarting the grind again for finals. Great event, upDOOTed!

As the semester is coming to an end soon, it is once again time for the last major event of the semester before exam period is here and everybody disappears to become a closet mugger. In contrast to the traditional Angels & Mortals event in years past, our dear S&W portfolio has organised for us a unique Easter themed carnival event – Bunnyval 2018!

The evening started off with registration, where each of us was given a keychain with an attached mini Rubik’s cube, lightbulb or ping pong bat. As we continued into the function hall, we were greeted by egg painting and glass painting booths. Dinner was soon served, and friends gathered to catch up and chat with each other after taking food from the sumptuous buffet line. It was then that my friend decided to scramble and solve his mini Rubik’s cube, using the classic break and rebuild in frustration only to realise it wasn’t that easy to put a mini one back together.

As the food slowly disappeared and the crowd slowly built up at the central painting booths to create some masterpieces, S&W gathered everyone for a short briefing while gamemasters (including myself) went to our respective stations to standby. It was finally time for the carnival!

There were 8 carnival-like game booths for the event, 6 in the function hall itself and 2 in the Cultural Rooms upstairs. Everyone was issued their own carnival card (the event ticket) which entitled us to play the game booths and collect points for our groups – Jack Frost, Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy and Sandman.

It was then free and easy for everyone to visit the game booths to collect points, or just hang around and chill with friends. There was much laughter and a wide range of funny antics at all the different booths, from participants frantically throwing marbles into sloths’ mouths at the Save Our Sloths booth to gamemasters having the workout of the semester running after wild ping pong balls at the ‘water pong’ booth.

Well, most booths at least… My own Bucket Ball booth had a very fast turnover for each attempt which saw many dejected faces and some surprised ones. Many came back even after their 2 tries had been used up, solely to figure out how to get the tennis balls to stay inside the bucket to give their group mates an edge, from analysing the trajectory, impact point and even the spin of the ball in flight – the true CN Yang spirit indeed! I still had my fair share of the workout though; the water pong booth was right beside mine.

S&W soon announced the closure of all the game booths for the mass game – a CN Yang themed quiz trivia hosted on Kahoot. It had a wide range of questions from the date of S&W’s welfare giveaway, to the food Isha (one of the S&W members) has tried (or not) and even the material of my own wallet! Our trivia champion soon emerged – James Ng from Year 2, well done!

The event ended off with the lucky draw and also prize presentations. Congratulations to Tooth Fairy for winning best group, as well as to the Best Egg painters for a job well done! Everyone then gathered in front of the photobooth for a mass photo followed by the long-anticipated EWP distribution before calling it a night. Thank you to our Biz Mags for preparing the EWPs and to our S&W for a fun and memorable event. Job well done to both! ?

As you enter the hall, pictures of your favorite childhood cartoons surround you, flooding your mind with nostalgic memories from back then. Seeing new friends in their old uniforms, fondly remembering their pre-CN Yang days, it was truly a night to remember. The small trinkets like the loom bands and bubbles took us back to our early childhood days, as we relived those gleeful carefree moments in the warmth of the function hall.

The event started off with registration, where we all got small goodie bags where we could put in the small snacks we chose from a basket. This was followed by a chill dinner, a usual sight in our CN Yang events, with groups of friends chilling on the floor of the function hall, except this time, on cute picnic mats.

There were a total of 6 performances, ranging from instrumentals, bands with guitarists to just a solo by everyone’s favourite Chinese singer, Meldon! And of course how can we forget the freestyle beatboxing and dancing duo; Nitin and Darren, blowing us all away with their sick moves.

Not forgetting all the great games played during the intermission! Oh man I wish I hadn’t emceed for the event because if I could have played, I would have totally nailed ‘Don’t forget the lyrics!!’

I guess everyone’s favourite part (aside from the performances of course) was the lucky draw! (Another familiar item at CN Yang events!)

Being a performer is a special experience. I guess it gives you an avenue to be able to share your feelings and memories through something deeper than just words, but rather emotions and an interpretation of a work of art. What felt even better was when people in the audience seemed to see eye to eye with us as we sang, creating a bond that’s both strong yet strangely and inexplicably distant from oneself.

Being a part of the small and rather familial CN Yang community brings a certain warmth with it, especially to SnW events. It’s really a comforting feeling now, and I guess that’s because it’s home.
