Rediscovering Singapore:
A Melting Pot of Culture
Heritage Week is a special event organized by NTU Heritage Club every academic year with the aim of raising the awareness and interest of NTU community in cultural heritage knowledge by bringing to campus interactive game booths and various kinds of performances.
As Singapore slowly transitions into the post pandemic era, it marks the return of Heritage Week with the theme “Rediscovering Singapore: A Melting Pot of Culture” which will serve as an excellent opportunity for you to “rediscover” your own culture, or even broaden your knowledge on the other cultures of Singapore through various interactive game booths and cultural performances.
Collaborating Clubs
Experience the Singapore’s Malay culture through a series of traditional games such as congkak, five stones & chapteh hosted by the Malay Language & Cultural Society. Do come visit them to reminisce about your childhood games!
Interested in bringing home some unique art-crafts? Then come visit the Tamil Literacy Society where they have prepared some interesting art-craft tutorials such as wooden name card making which is unique to the Indian culture.
Come visit us at the Chinese culture booth hosted by NTU Heritage Club to experience a series of fun and exciting activities such as calligraphy art, Chinese chess and paper cutting.
Interested to find out more about the Sikh culture? Then come visit the Sikh Cultural & Literacy Society where they have prepared exciting activities such as colouring Phulkari and many more!
Performances
Dragon & Lion Dance is part of a traditional culture in Singapore, commonly seen during Chinese New Year, Dragon & Lion Dance acts as a good event opener to draw the crowd’s attention and in tradition, it aims to bring luck and prosperity to our event.
Dikir Barat is a musical form, native to the Malay Peninsula, that involves singing in groups with or without instrumental accompaniment. It is a unique performance to showcase and promote the Malay culture to the NTU community.
Silat is the most common generic term for martial arts in the modern Malay speaking world. Silat was mainly introduced as a form of self-defence system for ancient Malay empires but modern silat is one of the performance art. This performance also introduces Malay martial art’s culture to the NTU community.
Chinese Dance is a highly varied performing arts consisting of many modern and traditional dance genres. It showcases the essence and spirit of Chinese culture through their elegant dance movement, eventually entertain the crowd.
Despite introducing the Malay form of martial art – Silat, we would also like to invite the Wushu club to introduce Chinese martial art to the NTU community. This aesthetic performance includes a diversity of Wushu styles like fist forms and weapon routines.
