Biohackathon

Who Are We?

SBS Biohackathon Committee

We are a group of SBS students interested in programming and hacking, especially in the Biology context. Our purpose is to create a culture of innovation and community amongst SBS students through learning and applying programming and data science skills in the field of Biology. This will be achieved through open workshops on popular programming languages in Biology and industrial engagement with Bioinformatics and Data Science related organisations before leading up to our annual flagship hackathon event βιοχάκαθον (bee-o-hey-ka-thon) which is for SBS students to showcase their programming talent.

Our Mission

Making Data Science and Programming fun for biology students

Our Vision

For students in SBS and other disciplines to come together, sharing the interest of Programming and Data Science

Our Events

Introductory and Intermediate Workshops in Python and R

We conduct introduction to Python and R workshops in the first few weeks of each semester to help raise the interest of SBS students in programming and provide them with the basics on how to get started.

Industrial Talks by our partners

We also work closely with our industrial partners and government agencies to provide opportunities for SBS students to network with technology companies in the fields of Biology and Bioengineering. We also partner with other interest groups such as Ananta and Women in Tech to organize such events to increase the diversity of sharings conducted.

Biohackathon

We organize the annual βιοχάκαθον as a platform for young aspiring SBS students to have a go at an intensive, guided experience in bioinformatics, machine learning and web development using the dataset which we provided. Recently, we concluded our inaugural βιοχάκαθον 2021 in May. 7 teams totalling 31 participants attended our event and successfully submitted a prototype web application. Below shows our winning team ‘Megacephalus’ and their presentation on Campylobacter jejuni morphotypes taken together with our esteemed professors.

Our participants also took to Instagram Story to show us how they managed to complete the hackathon despite the restrictions placed due to COVID-19. Truly, nothing can stop us from coding, not even a worldwide pandemic. Below shows our winning entry for our Instagram contest.
