On 12 March, USPians showed off their green fingers in USProut, an environmental-awareness workshop organized by the Social Services Project (SSP) committee with our partner social organisation FILOS Community Services. USProut is the second instalment of the U Aspire Series, which aims to inspire the young minds of FILOS by introducing them to meaningful career options. During the fun-filled event, USPians talked about environment-related careers and helped the children to build a terrarium each for themselves.
Building a terrarium was a fun and easy activity for children to learn more about the environment, said Sylvia Chen, one of the organizers. At the same time, USPians could act as facilitators and engage the children, giving back to the community by promoting the environmental message.
The children were given common terrarium plants carpet moss and mini fittonia, and materials such as glass jars, gravel, decorative items and soil. Students from the SSP committee then presented the importance of environmental conservation to the children, while the other USPians proceeded to help the children build a terrarium for themselves.
USPians took much pride and joy when the children managed to successfully build a terrarium with their assistance. “My favourite part was seeing the kids happy with the terrarium they built themselves,” said Crystal Hong, one of the USP facilitators.
FILOS was grateful for the time and effort USPians took to organize and plan this event for the children. As a token of appreciation, FILOS presented each USPian with a notebook and a bottle of Ribena.
Ms Yayah Ie, Programme Coordinator of FILOS, said: ““I think the theme and topic are [conducive] for [the children] to be aware of the environment, and the activities are very fun.”
