The children from both FILOS and Fei Yue Community Services were in for a luscious treat as they took part in a fun-filled adventure organized by the USP Social Services Project (SSP) committee last Friday.
Right in NTU, USPians took charge of the children and engaged them in entertaining activities based on the hit movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” The children first enjoyed a free screening of the movie, along with scrumptious snacks.
Explaining the rationale behind the event, Social Services Project director Loh Xin Peng said, “Charlie and the chocolate factory is a family-friendly movie that teaches a lot of important values – not to be greedy, be obedient, and be filial – especially because it is a cartoon movie, it is easier for the children to absorb them.”
Afterwards, USPians taught the children how to create a stop-motion video, using plasticine and stickers. Intrigued by such a set-up, creative juices quickly flowed and the children directed their own video.
A series of innovative station games located around NTU soon ensued. One station involved their dancing in order to shake off post-it notes, while another tested their balance and coordination skills as they tried to keep their balloons in the air with both hands for as long as possible.
Along the way, USPians acted as facilitators and enjoyed interacting with the children, who looked up to the USPians as “big sisters and brothers”.
“I thought it was fantastic. It was a truly inspiring learning experience, and I got to interact with a lot of cute kids. They are all very adorable and obedient, and I would love to work with them again,” said Leow Jit Corn, a Year 2 Nanyang Business School student.
At the end of the whole event, the children were awarded with a golden ticket and a Willy Wonka Chocolate bar.
“I see the children enjoying themselves, and they seem very happy after playing the games,” said Ms Nancy, a Fei Yue Community services teacher.
Teachers from both groups were thankful of the amount of effort USPians put in for the children, and welcomed the possibility of such events in the future.
Ms Yayah Ie, Programme Coordinator of FILOS, said: “I appreciate all the hard work that the team has put in to make this event happen.”
