The EX-Factor: Removing the Overseas Dilemma to CHANGE Your World Perspective

Your guide to key semester exchange opportunities at NTU

“If I can’t get into the University of College London as a full-time student, I’d definitely want to go there for an exchange!” After surviving the intense pressure of finals, who wouldn’t dream of a fresh environment to study in, making international friends, or even just experiencing a climate that isn’t Singapore’s perpetual summer?

But let’s be real—many of us are in the same boat: completely clueless about Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) exchange options. And with so many choices, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

That’s where this blog post comes in! Whether you’re chasing an academic adventure, looking to explore the world, or just need a change of scenery, we’ve got you covered. Here’s your go-to guide to the key semester exchange programmes NTU offers. Specifically, we’ll be looking at the Global Education & Mobility (GEM) Explorer and Singapore University Student Exchange Programme (SUSEP). Let’s dive in and make your “this or that” decision a no-brainer!

Overseas Opportunities: Gem Explorer

Are you dreaming of spending a semester abroad while earning academic credits? Look no further than GEM Explorer! This program offers NTU students the opportunity to embark on a one-semester exchange at renowned universities across 40+ countries.

GEM Explorer is your chance to experience a new learning environment, immerse yourself in diverse cultures, and, of course, explore your host country during your downtime (yes, we know you were hoping for that!).

For students from the School of Social Sciences (SSS), the programme allows you to clear up to 20 Academic Units (AUs) of Major Prescribed Electives (MPEs) and Broadening & Deepening Electives (BDEs). If you’re pursuing interdisciplinary or double majors, you can earn up to 25 AUs at one of 50 partner universities tailored to your academic interests. However, please note that GEM Explorer is open only for year 2 students and above. (see SSS’ Exchange Guidelines here)

With so many choices, you might find yourself overwhelmed, but don’t fret—we’ve got your back! We’ve highlighted the top two universities across regions from Asia to North America that are typically available on Gem Explorer, selected based on the courses you’ve taken at NTU. (Disclaimer: Our picks are guided by QS rankings, but be sure to do your own research before making your decision.)

Note: all our research below is compiled from the NTU Gem Explorer individual university brochures, which you can find by accessing the GEM Mobility Portal and clicking on ‘Gem Explorer’.

The main costs listed under each university are taken from the individual university brochures and have been converted to SGD, but ultimately remain estimates and may be subject to change by the universities/exchange rates/unforeseen economic circumstances. There may also be other costs such as visa application & transport costs that are not mentioned here, so please also do your own research 🙂

📒Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

Psychology students, this is a fantastic opportunity for you! If you’re looking to take modules like NTU’s HP3703 (Health Psychology), SUSS is a great place for your exchange. At SUSS, you’ll not only have the chance to explore modules in Health Psychology but also experience a seminar-style teaching approach that emphasizes interactive learning and hands-on assignments over traditional exams. This can be perfect for those who prefer practical application and deeper engagement with course material.

Okay, so there’re obviously lots of options available for semester exchange. Many of you might face the dilemma of choosing between an overseas or local exchange programme. We’re here to share some thoughts to help you decide!

💵 Cost: If you’re looking for a more cost-effective option, SUSEP might be the better choice. With SUSEP, you only need to pay normal tuition fees. For instance, NUS states that students will “pay tuition fees and Miscellaneous Student Fees (which, fyi, are around $115) to NUS. Tuition fees at the host institution are waived for students nominated for exchange”. Conversely, in Gem Explorer, you would have to pay additional expenses such as accommodation and other costs, which are often higher in other regions compared to Singapore. Although if you’re on a budget but still want to explore an exchange programme, you can consider GEM Explorer in less traditional and cheaper options (e.g. the Czech Republic / China).

🗂️Modules: It is highly likely that you will be able to explore a wider variety of modules in foreign countries, allowing you to take unique modules that you might not have access to at NTU. However, one benefit of SUSEP is it allows you to do a partial exchange, so you can continue to clear mods in NTU (e.g. ICC mods) while doing others at another Singapore university.

Eligibility: NTU has over 350 partner universities for semester exchange, and each university has their own admission requirements, ranging from GPA to what year of study you are in, and even your major (certain universities only accept e.g. NBS students). Each university also has a limited number of slots per semester. Therefore, you should definitely double-check the requirements before applying to any universities. On a similar vein, will you be able to course-match? (check out our other article for tips on course-matching during exchange)

✈️Experience: There’s a saying, “All growth starts at the end of your comfort zone.” If you’re ready to challenge yourself by living abroad for a few months, GEM Explorer offers the perfect opportunity. You’ll take charge of arranging your accommodation, ensuring your safety in a new environment, and adapting to different climates. And if you love traveling and immersing yourself in different cultures, GEM Explorer is your chance to do just that! You could even “jio” your friends for weekend road trips to explore the country of your choice and create unforgettable experiences beyond Singapore. On the other hand, if you prefer to stay closer to home, SUSEP could be the better fit.

🎉Lifestyle (friends and family): This is sort of related to the above point – some people enjoy the opportunity to enter a new environment (whether it is another local university or, more drastically, overseas) and make new friends, or get a “fresh start” for one semester. But others may feel lonely and struggle with making friends due to cultural/language barriers.

Conclusion

I hope this article helped make your decision simpler! Whether you ultimately choose SUSEP or GEM Explorer, always remember that stepping out of your comfort zone to experience a new culture or environment can be incredibly rewarding. It’s an opportunity to explore beyond the familiar and grow in ways you never imagined!

Now that you’ve selected your university, you might be wondering about course matching. Stay tuned for our next blog post, where we’ll guide you through the course matching process!
