Our warmest congratulations to Professor Kerry Sieh, who has been awarded Professor Emeritus status! In a Professor Installation Ceremony that took place before the NTU President’s State of the University Address on 15 September, four retired NTU Professors, of which two are from the CoS, were conferred this honour. Professor Kerry Sieh retired after ten years as director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in January this year.

“The Emeritus Professorship is a life-long honorary appointment conferred on tenured full Professors after their retirement, in recognition of exemplary service and contributions to the University, including distinguished scholarship, and for which continued association is deemed meritorious to the University and the professoriate community.”

Prof Sieh joined NTU in 2008 to set up the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS). Under his leadership EOS quickly established itself as a leading international research center for geohazards with focus on Southeast Asia. He recruited many prominent earth scientists, of which several won the NRF Fellowship and Investigatorship.

As a paleoseismologist, Kerry Sieh studies earthquakes of the past, to learn what to expect from a fault (a crack in the Earth’s crust) in the future, enabling us to plan for safe and sustainable human societies. Highlights of his research career include work on the San Andreas fault in southern California and the subduction megathrust offshore Sumatra. He has also uncovered the nature of several active faults in Taiwan and Myanmar.

Among his many honours, Prof Sieh is a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Honorary Member of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists.

EOS staff express their thanks to Kerry Sieh at the annual EOS meeting in January 2020.
