Experiential Learning Using Real-World Data: Quantum Black X CoS X Castlery

by | Mar 2, 2021 | Biology, School of Biological Sciences

NTU College of Science (CoS) has recently established a partnership with Quantum Black (QB) – a McKinsey company specializing in analytics – to provide case study mentorship for some of our CoS students. For a start, QB and CoS have co-designed a case study-centric course for the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) MSc in Biomedical Data Science programme.

In the SBS course, BS6206 Experiential Data Science, students will learn about ways to apply data science theories in a competitive real-world setting, and will acquire soft skills (e.g. teamwork, communication, leadership and grit) necessary for successful outcomes via experiential learning in teams.

In the first BS6206 lesson on 24 Feb, conducted on Zoom, QB and CoS gave a glimpse into the exciting new course. Students will get the valuable opportunity to solve real-life business problems using data, and will get access to QB data scientists and analytics translators who can help in problem-solving sessions.

So how does the popular online furniture store, Castlery, come into the picture? Here’s the exciting part – students will dissect actual datasets provided by Castlery. This way, students will be exposed to how data science is delivered in large corporations, by taking on the role of consultants who take on the challenging role of helping solve clients’ problems using data.

CoS will work towards expanding this partnership with QB to provide more opportunities for our students in experiential learning. Stay tuned!
