Congratulations to Team Benthos on winning the International Natural Sciences Tournament (INST)! The INST Grand Finals concluded on 25 July 2021. Team Benthos consisted of the following CoS students:

  • How Wei Bin (Chemistry & Biological Chemistry, SPMS), Team Captain
  • Alexis Goh (Environmental Earth Systems Science, ASE)
  • Tng Jia Wei Teddy (Biological Sciences, SBS)
  • Norman Koo Tze Wei (Chemistry & Biological Chemistry SPMS)

Team Benthos.

Ang Jing Lun (MSE/4) was also part of the team during last year’s Extramural Round, but was unable to compete in the final tournament as part of the team due to work commitments. Nonetheless, the team are extremely grateful for his contributions to the solutions.

In the Individual Championship, Alexis and Norman finished first, and Wei Bin came in second.

On their experience, the team recounted, “The INST has been a gruelling tournament that challenged competing teams to brainstorm, research, experiment, and present solutions to scientific questions. We faced formidable opponents from various countries, who brought alternative perspectives to the same problems we had solved.

“The jury also consisted of PhD students and professors from a variety of fields, and they gave insightful and valuable comments from their fields of expertise. The debate style of the tournament encouraged engaging discussions about the effectiveness of the solutions presented, and invited us to also be critical of our own work.

“Overall, the competition was incredibly intellectually-stimulating and required participants to be well-versed across the sciences. We highly recommend students to participate in future tournaments, as it would be a meaningful learning experience, and an invaluable opportunity to gain exposure to unique ideas from participants from around the world.”
