Biological Sciences & Psychology: Meet Balaji from NTU SBS

by | Jan 25, 2022 | Biology, People, School of Biological Sciences

As part of NTU School of Biological Science’s (SBS) Meet Our Students series, we connected with undergraduates from the school’s seven different programmes to learn about their motivations behind joining the programme, their experiences here at NTU SBS and more. In this series, we will also address some frequently asked questions about the programme.

The third undergraduate we met was Balaji Srinivasan, who is enrolled in the double major Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and Psychology programme.

Can you share with us why did you join NTU SBS Biological Sciences and Psychology (BSPY) Double Major Programme?

I think that the double major combines the most interesting things about us! Biology and Psychology give us a holistic viewpoint, helping us to understand people and the whys and hows of what we do!

What do you like most about BSPY?

I like the variety of things we learn here! Learning both Biology and Psychology gives us the best of both worlds. We get to pick from a wide variety of modules, so you’re able to pick anything that interests you.

Any tips or advice for prospective students of the BSPY Programme?

For anyone interested to join BSPY, it helps to have a strong sense of curiosity! It also helps to be organised as there can be a lot going on at the same time 😊

Can you share with us a quote that you live by?

“A day in which nothing is learned, is a day wasted.”

What is something special about our school?

We have a clade system like the houses in Hogwarts!

What activities have you participated or organised during your course of study at NTU SBS?

I have organised clade study sessions where clade members come together to study for finals! Together with other three clade leaders, we are responsible in facilitating a safe, welcoming, and supportive community for all SBS students through fun, inclusive activities like clade study sessions, clade cohesion (semesterly bonding days), and monthly clade challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pursue further studies in Psychology to become a Psychologist after taking this programme?

This degree programme introduces you to a diverse career path. As Psychology and Biology are related, it will likely be easier for you to become a Psychologist. However, do take note that to be a Psychologist, you will need to obtain a specialised certificate. Our double major programme aids you in fulfilling the entrance requirements for such specialisation courses.

Would taking this double major put me at any disadvantage from a person who only did Psychology?

No, in fact you will have more career options, both in psychology related and life science sectors. Psychologist in major organizations may be required to conduct certain research portfolios and if the psychologist has knowledge on neurobiology and science background, this is to his/her advantage.

Am I automatically accepted into the Doctor of Medicine programme at the Duke-NUS Medical School when I take up BSPY?

No. It is not guaranteed. Applicants who have been offered the programme by NTU SBS will be invited to indicate your interest in this pathway. Duke-NUS Medical School will shortlist, conduct interviews, and eventually offer successful applicants conditional admission to this pathway.
