Biomedical Sciences & BioBusiness: Meet Wei Quan from NTU SBS

by | Jan 27, 2022 | Biology, People, School of Biological Sciences

As part of NTU School of Biological Science’s (SBS) Meet Our Students series, we connected with undergraduates from the school’s seven different programmes to learn about their motivations behind joining the programme, their experiences here at NTU SBS and more. In this series, we will also address some frequently asked questions about the programme.

The fourth undergraduate we met was Lee Wei Quan, who is pursuing a double major Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences & BioBusiness programme.

Can you share with us why did you join NTU SBS Biomedical Sciences & BioBusiness (BSB) Programme?

It is a unique programme that combines both my interest in Biology and BioBusiness. To further prepare us to become bioentrepreneurs, SBS also invites distinguished professors to share with us exciting opportunities and developments in the field of biobusinesses. There are so many interesting programs and modules offered by the school! There will definitely be at least a module in NTU SBS’s extensive list of electives that will pique your interest. You can choose from a list of interesting modules such as plant biology, data analytics, neurobiology or even a 2-weeks intensive lab to challenge yourself!

What do you like most about BSB?

What I like the most about BSB is the cross disciplinary trainings we receive in both Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness! This really opens more opportunities beyond a laboratory bench after graduation. With a small cohort, my batch-mates and I are a close-knitted family.

Any tips or advice for prospective students of the BS Programme?

For anyone interested in BSB, interest in both Biomedical Science and BioBusiness is a must. The highlight of BSB is the overseas exchange to Copenhagen Business School (CBS) in Denmark, Copenhagen where we undergo a semester of intensive training in BioBusiness. After which, we will embark on a BioBusiness related Final Year Project. Also, throughout the 4 years, we keep a biobusiness ideation journal and can turn our ideas into reality with NTUitive.

Can you share with us a quote that you live by?

My favourite quote is “I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday” by José N. Harris. We are making progress towards our dreams every single day, no matter how small. Do not get disheartened on bad days, keep your head forward and constantly improve on yourself!

What is something special about our school?

It is the many hangout spots where you can study with your friends through the night during finals, namely the Clade Room, Study Lounge and the “24-hour” classrooms. You can also catch the breath-taking sunset at the second level of SBS while chilling on the benches with your friends!

What activities have you participated or organised during your course of study at NTU SBS?

In NTU SBS, I have participated in the Freshmen Orientation Programme (FOP) both as a freshman and as a senior. FOP introduces you to the culture of SBS and you get to forge lifelong friendships with the people you meet!

No. It is not guaranteed. Applicants who have been offered the programme by NTU SBS will be invited to indicate your interest in this pathway. Duke-NUS Medical School will shortlist, conduct interviews, and eventually offer successful applicants conditional admission to this pathway.
