Global Undergraduate Awards 2022: Highly Commended Entrants from NTU SBS

This year, we are proud to share that there are six undergraduates from the School of Biological Sciences at Nanyang Technological University who rank in the top 10% among all submissions in their category for the Global Undergraduate Awards (UA) 2022!

Cited as the ultimate championship of high-potential undergraduates and often referred to as a “junior Nobel Prize”, the Global Undergraduate Awards is the world’s largest international academic awards programme, recognising excellent research and original work across the sciences, humanities, business and creative arts.

Congratulations to the following Highly Commended Entrants:

  1. Chong Wei Jing, B.Sc in Biological Sciences, Class of 2022 graduate
  • Award Category: Life Sciences
  • Research Title: Screening for Viral Entry Inhibitors against SARS-CoV-2
  • Research Description: In vitro screening of repurposed drugs and herbal products to block SARS-CoV-2 viral entry via the ACE2 receptor.
  1. Duong Tien Quang Huy, B.Sc in Biological Sciences, Class of 2022 graduate
  • Award Category: Life Sciences
  • Research Title: Transcriptomic analysis of human blood samples to identify severity-associated markers in Plasmodium knowlesi malaria
  • Research Description: In my study, I focused on the changes in leukocyte abundance and the expression profiles associated with malaria clinical status. Additionally, malaria-associated viruses and their potential impact on malaria severity were also investigated.
  1. Ng Yan Jie, Chester, B.Sc in Biomedical Sciences and Chinese Medicine (Double Degree), Year 3
  • Award Category: Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Healthcare
  • Research Title: The effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of mature adult females with obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis
  • Research Description: My research aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of different modes of acupuncture for the treatment of obesity in adult females using a systematic review and meta-analysis approach.
  1. Lim Jiaqi Alyssa, B.Sc in Biological Sciences, Year 4
  • Award Category: Education
  • Research Title: Understanding students’ language difficulties in science writing
  • Research Description: Due to the inextricable connection between language and thought, my work examines the intersections between the linguistic and content demands faced by students when explaining scientific concepts for more effective delivery and learning of science.
  1. See Qi Rui, B.Sc in Biological Sciences with Minor in Psychology, Year 4
  • Award Category: Psychology
  • Research Title: How Socio-Economic Status (SES) Affects Cognitive Flexibility in Infants
  • Research Description: By exploring the differences in cognitive flexibility between socio-economic groups, it provides a critical impetus for developing new and early interventions for infants in low-income families.
  1. Jerry Tan Wei Heng, B.Sc in Biological Sciences with Minor in Psychology, Year 4
  • Award Category: Medical Sciences
  • Research Title: Investigating the genotype-to-phenotype basis of Coronary Artery Disease
  • Research Description: We investigate how the presence of a specific single nucleotide polymorphism predisposes the Han Chinese population to a higher susceptibility for Coronary Artery Disease, and we do so by using patient-derived cellular models to elucidate the complex molecular connections between the genotype and its pathophysiology.
