Introducing: SPMS

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is organised into two divisions encompassing the core scientific and mathematical disciplines of Mathematical Sciences and Physics and Applied Physics.

The Division of Physics and Applied Physics carries out education and research in many areas of fundamental and applied physics, including quantum information science, condensed matter physics, complexity science, and photonics.

The Division of Mathematical Sciences covers diverse topics ranging from pure mathematics to the applications of mathematics in cryptography, computing, business optimisation, and finance.

Work-Study Degree Programme

The SPMS Work-Study Degree Programme (WSDeg)* offers on-the-job training experiences during students’ candidature at NTU, in partnership with one of SPMS’s industry-leading company partners. These experiences will enhance students’ readiness for the workplace, giving them an advantage in landing their dream job after graduation.

The programme consists of a sequence of credit-earning internships, culminating in an industry-sponsored WSDeg Final Year Project (FYP). Participating companies include DBS Bank, DSTA, Dyson, Eva Group, GlobalFoundries, Hyperganic, Makino, Manulife, Nordic Group Limited, SAP, ST Electronic Engineering, Schlumberger, Standard Chartered Bank, Swift Solutions, Vertex Holdings, Visa, and Yara International

Vibrant student life

There’s more to life than just studying! SPMS students have numerous opportunities to enrich their university experience by participating in activities organised by the SPMS Club or Graduate Student Club, including festival celebrations, sporting events, and community events. Incoming freshmen can take part in an Orientation and Transition programme packed with exciting games and activities.

Throughout their time at SPMS, the Student Welfare team is working to ensure that students have all the help you need, both inside and outside the classroom, including counselling and mentoring services. Students can utilize a peer tutoring service in case they need assistance with their coursework. SPMS also provides extensive career planning support, including coaching services, to help students gain an advantage in starting their career after graduation.

Odyssey Research Programme

The Odyssey Research Programme is for the student who is curious about science, thinks deeper, is one who is not daunted by failure, and who understands that questions are more important than the “right” answers. Each year, the Odyssey Research Programme brings approximately 30 undergraduates (known as ‘Odysseyans’ to actively participate in a paid research internship with faculty members of SPMS.

At the end of the 12-week programme, Odysseyans’ research culminates in an Odyssey Research Symposium. Odysseyans will present posters and/or talks describing their work and all members of the SPMS community will be invited. Through the Odyssey Research Programme, Odysseyans get thoroughly immersed into the academic community at SPMS. We hope that this provides lasting and valuable support throughout the Odysseyan’s academic career, to beyond their time at SPMS.
