The College of Science is delighted to extend a warm welcome to Professor Kanaga Sabapathy, who commences his appointment as the Chair of the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) today (1 June 2023). He is also the President’s Chair in Biological Sciences.

In his capacity as the new Chair of SBS, Professor Sabapathy will leverage on its existing strengths and steer it to new heights. His focus will be on advancing the frontiers of structural biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell biology, and other emerging sub-disciplines. Guided by the National Technological University’s (NTU) vision, mission, and strategic directions, he will lead SBS to new horizons of achievement.

Professor Sabapathy joins NTU from the National Cancer Centre Singapore, where he led the Division of Cellular & Molecular Research. He is an accomplished researcher in the field of cancer with more than 32 years of experience in healthcare, scientific and tertiary sectors.

Professor Sabapathy received his doctorate in Cellular & Molecular Immunology from the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Singapore. Following the completion of his PhD, he expanded his knowledge and expertise through postdoctoral research conducted at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, Austria.

He is widely acknowledged as an opinion leader in his field. He has a strong track record in securing large competitive grants from major funding sources such as the National Medical Research Council and National Research Foundation Singapore.  His scholarly contributions extend to over 95 published articles and book chapters published in peer-reviewed journals, seven patents and applications, and several honours for his outstanding research contributions. He is a member of the scientific advisory boards of the National Foundation for Cancer Research in the United States and the Hong Kong-based Asian Fund for Cancer Research.

We would like to thank Prof Lars Nordenskiöld, Professor of Biological Sciences, for his leadership of SBS as its Chair since 2019, during which he developed new research strengths at the School that resulted in high-profile publications with significant impact. His efforts also led to successful follow-up grants and translational outcomes.
